Michael Ziegler Photography - Photo Collection Index

Welcome to my site!

Almost everything you see as you navigate within the different categories is about beauty--people, objects, nature. Some images are happy, some sad, some breathtakingly beautiful, some curious or humorous, others quiet and simple and without need to be categorized.

Most images are available as hand-made photo note cards, and you simply go to the Photo Notecard Store to make your selections, add to your cart, and place your order. If you see something outside the Notecard section of the Store, and want to know if it's available as a note card, please call or email.

Likewise, many images are for sale as Fine Art or "wall art." In the Portfolio section you'll find a good range of subjects, but many other images will be found in the Photo Notecard Store or Stock Collection sections. Prices vary according to size and other factors, and in many cases you can choose between a less-expensive resin-coated print and an ultra-permanent fiber print. Soon we'll be able to offer what I call "semi-permanent" giclee (inkjet) prints which will appeal to architects and designers wanting to order multiples of the same image without paying fiber print prices.

The ordering system for Fine Art prints is not yet installed, so you'll have to email or call with questions about size, quality and prices.

With STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY it's difficult to list every variable element that goes into an estimate of what it will cost to lease the rights to an image--so please contact us and we can work it out!

If you feel adventurous and decide to look at every image on this site, be forewarned that this is but the tip of the iceberg, and many thousands more images will be added just as soon as time and resources permit! If you see something that's "close" to what you want, feel free to contact us and ask if we have anything else that hasn't been scanned and added to the site. Quality takes time.

In the meantime, enjoy what's here . . . and don't forget to bookmark this site.

Photograph Categories

  • Photography Portfolio - Welcome to my portfolio! To view a section of my portfolio, please click on one of the tabs above. I hope you enjoy looking at these photographs, which range from classic landscapes to humorous and ironic street and people photograpy, to objects and images more abstract and mysterious. If you're looking for notecards go to Photography Store. In Stock you'll find a wide range of images from many peoples and places in the world, updated regularly.
    • Commercial - "Lots of technically skilled photographers can make pretty pictures in a studio, but not very many photographers are prepared to handle the complexities and unexpected situations of on-site photography"
      • Concepts - The photographic image is perfect for making your point, either with subtlety or bluntness. Are you trying to make a statement about trust, teamwork or security? Or are you trying to appeal to Baby Boomers with something nostalgic? Browse through the large collection of stock photography, and you might just find that perfect image to help get your point across. What is posted so far is a fraction of the total images in my collection. If you don't quite find what you need, please call or email.
      • Events - Do you need an experienced, reliable photographer to handle a large event? Weve been taking care of clients for 20 years, and one of our specialities is doing large groups--conventions, marching bands, company photos. Whether its a holiday party, a corporate golf tournament, a class reunion or documenting a special event, were comfortable with whatever requirements you may have. We can take charge of an event, or be as discreet as you need.
      • Executive Portraits - A great portrait says a lot about you. The trick is to pull it off as quickly as possible, because your time is precious. I light each of my portraits carefully to capture the individual's unique personality, but do it in a manner that is efficient. Like your business.
      • Motion - All of these images were created in the camera, or in the darkroom. No Photoshop here.
      • On Location - Almost any technically competent photographer can make pretty pictures in a studio. But very few are prepared to handle the complexities and the unexpected situations which often arise during an on-site photography session. With a portfolio that includes names like Boeing, The Bon Marche, GTE, Microsoft and Weyerhauser, I have the experience to handle almost any situation.
      • Products - Do you want literal, functional, straightforward product photography? You got it. Do you want something wild or "interpretive" or digitally altered? You got that, too. How about a photo CD? It's yours. Ask and you will receive! Some of these images were taken in studio, others on location, perhaps in a "studio" set up on site.
    • Fine Art - Beautiful landscapes, powerful seascapes, unusual and ironic street photography, zen-like still lifes, classic nudes, mysterious, obscure abstracts--they're all here, waiting to be explored. Enjoy.
      • Americana - Warm, brown-toned images straight out of the pages of a Norman Rockwell sketch book--captured with the detail only a fine photograph can...or softened and diffused to create a magical interpretation of a fleeting moment, a slice of time, a disappearing America. If you know of something that needs to be documented, please get in touch with me!
      • Architecture - Soaring mosques and gothic cathedrals, quaint miners' row houses, stately Victorian mansions, sagging but noble barns, spired steel bridges and exquisite detail all attest to the spirit of the builder, as captured by my eye, my choice of lens, lighting, angle of view. Someone else will do it entirely differently. That's photography.
      • Cities, Streets & People - Street scenes are perhaps the most difficult photography of all. Many have tried, few succeed. Timing, composition, irony, quirkiness, humor--they're all there, if you have the insight, and the skill, enormous patience...and a little bit of luck. My favorite kind of photography, what I'd rather be doing than anything else.
        • Europe - Europe is a rich, unending source of inspiration for artists of all types, and photography is no exception. Cities, streets, people, buildings, landscapes all present themselves in an ongoing kaleidescope of images waiting to be organized into shapes and forms we can understand and appreciate. Why didn't I see that? . . .
        • Great Britain - England and Scotland, from London to Inverness and Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands. Down in the pit (coal mine), gravediggers, lace factory and much more coming as time permits. Color and black and white.
        • Iran - My two trips to Iran in the late 70s were never long enough to see even a fraction of this fascinating country. On my second visit I was asked by the Secret Police to leave just months before the Shah was ousted and Ayatollah Khomeini and the fundamentalist clerics took over. I was able to come away with many hundreds of interesting images, however, and as we get them scanned we will add them to this section. Stay tuned.
        • Italy - The Italy you see here is so unlike Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice that you might not think you're in the Land of Everyone's Favorite Travel Guides. Because I was a guest of an Italian Greek Orthodox priest in Modena, I went where he and his friends took me in northern Italy, and these images are the result. I told them I wasn't particularly interested in normal tourist places, so they took me high into the mountains, where we did a lot more uphill walking than I wanted. Anything to get a good picture, right?
        • Other American Cities - From small cities like Bellingham, Washington to San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, D.C., enjoy this eclectic collection of random places and moments. Stay tuned: lots more images coming!
        • Seattle - My home town for the past 20 years, this city of neighborhoods, lakes and hills is full of enough great vantage points to keep a photographer busy for years. Our famous rain clouds often create a soft, diffused light that makes for perfect people/street photography. Many of my images are sepia and black and white, which helps to bring a historical perspective to this forward-looking metropolis.
        • Spain - All of my photographs of Spain were taken in the northeast, in Catalonia. I have hundreds more images to scan and download to this site, so please bear with me, and come back to visit. You can always email and ask how the project is going.
        • The Near East - To me, this vague designation means anything from Istanbul to the Khyber Pass, and it fascinates me like no other region on earth. Give me a camera and a thousand rolls of film and you'll never see me again. . . . For now almost all the images are from Istanbul, but one of these days I will find time to add hundreds from Iran. I promise you they will be interesting!
        • Turkey - As much as America is a modern melting pot, Turkey is an ancient one. Almost since the dawn of time, humankind has been crossing its vast plains and river valleys and high desert, and every time I visit I want to spend more time than I have to explore, to wait for perfect lighting, to capture at least part of what I feel for this glorious clash of East meets West. As time permits I'll add many more images to go with those here.
      • Classic Nudes - The human body has been a favorite subject for artists since prehistoric times. Black and white photography seems like the perfect medium to explore the nuances, let light and shadow play on the lines and curves and suggestions the body presents. Enjoy these elegant images, and if you feel the urge to immortalize yourself, give a call!
      • Italy - These sepia-toned images are all from Northern Italy, the Land Rarely Visited by Photographers and Other Tourists.
      • Landscapes - From Baja California to the Scottish Highlands, from the vast grain fields of the American Midwest to brooding treescapes of the Pacific Northwest, from the cities and shores of Europe and the Mediterranean to the mountains of Iran, Michael Ziegler has spent decades capturing the personalities of places around the globe.
      • Motion - Zooms and pans and jiggles and intuition and inner vision all come together to create images the eye cannot see; once committed to paper, they become snippets of a musical score, riffs from an alto sax, interpretations well beyond traditional photography--they sing, they dance: they're alive!
      • Still Life - Thoughtful, intimate, private moments, zen-like interpretations of one man's reality, frozen in time, permanent in the imagination. Look around you: these images are everywhere!
      • Waterscapes - Tranquil seas, crashing waves, glorious sunsets, clear mountain lakes, brash winter storms--what's your mood? Water is the great healer of troubled souls, the refresher of spirits. Go to the water, go to the sea. . . .
    • Portraits - Portraits don't have to be dull, artificial "shopping mall" photos, with cheesy smiles and boring lighting. Give a master the freedom to explore your personality, your moods with light and shadow and exquisite timing, and together we might come up with a minor masterpiece or two.
      • Children - For the important things, for lasting images of family history, for lifetimes of enjoying great portraits of your children, they MUST be in black and white, on archival, fiber paper. Nothing less will do. Don't even think about color, or modern, resin-coated black and white paper. Fiber, fiber, fiber! There are no short cuts. Sepia adds warmth, lightens shadow details and adds additional permanence.
      • General Portraits - From shadowy, dramatic chiaroscuro to a softer more diffuse treatment, Michael Ziegler's portrait sessions bring out the best in his subjects. The diversity of this portfolio is a testament to the uniqueness of the people who have asked him to try capture some of their very individual essence. If you want to hide behind a silly smile and look like everyone else in a manufactured pose, don't come here!
      • Infants - Timing is everything. Well, there's lighting and technique and a little luck, too. When everything comes together, it's magic.
      • Pets - Stalking a great mouse hunter is not easy work--you have to be very patient, and have the right equipment, and then be able to decide what to put in your frame, all in the blink of an eye, the flash of a lightning-quick cat paw. If you want to remember a great pet, shouldn't it be with a great portrait?
      • Sample Sessions
        • One Roll Session, Child - One roll consists of 30 frames with a medium format camera. Additional rolls are an option, at your choice.
        • One Roll Session, Infant - Some kids just HAVE it. It's almost as if they know they need to be "right" on every shot. Others couldn't care less. Get me out of here.
    • Sports - Seattle's summer of 2001 was a baseball-lover's dream season come true. It inspired me to assemble a show of my baseball photography, images that span the last thirty years. All time greats such as Willie Mays, Yaz and George Brett join contemporary favorites like Ichiro, Edgar and Big Mac in The Art of Baseball. Click your way through my Professional Sports section for a preview.
      • Non Professional - Amateurs--doing it for the love of the game--are the essence of sports. Find them playing on sandlots and empty parking lots; in school yards and side streets and back yards: running, jumping, pushing their limits or just playing for fun; in groups or solitaire--they are the past and the future of sports.
      • Professional - Willie Mays, Ichiro, Ken Griffey, Jr., Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Nolan Ryan, Arnold Palmer, Pistol Pete Maravich, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Phil Jackson, George Brett, John Havlicek, Yaz. All are actual photographs taken by me--not lithographic reproductions, or fast-fading posters. The real thing.
    • Weddings - In order of importance: 1. Getting married 2. Everyone having a good time 3. Great photographs 4. Everything else That said, be careful you have the right fit for your wedding photographer. Do your expectations require truly outstanding, timely, interesting documentation, or are you simply looking for someone to take the mandatory posed group shots? I'm constantly striving to get great images that can stand by themselves, that may end up in a book or gallery, images that have the right elements of timing and human interest--unusual, humorous or ironic. Call me if you expect more than the obvous.

    • Cityscapes - Many more images available; please inquire about specific places.
    • Classic Nudes - Volumes have been written about the human form. It seems to lend itself perfectly to the explorations of the camera, especially in the hands of a master of light and shadow, of mystery and suggestion. There's so much subtlety and nuance in the beauty of the body that I don't feel the need to go beyond the elegant, classic image. I'll leave "edgy" and "raw" to others.
    • Concepts - In the field of graphic arts and design, sometimes a less-than-literal approach is what is needed to make a real impact . A powerful image can become the seed of the original idea that becomes the key to your project. My category of Concepts is dedicated to the idea that a good photograph can sometimes evoke any number of interpretations.
